Balance and Proprioception
Why Balance and Proprioception Matter
Proprioception and balance are crucial senses that allow us to understand where our body is in space and how it is moving. They have a direct influence on our stability, coordination, and overall health.
These senses enable us to perform everyday activities effortlessly—walking through a dark room without stumbling, reaching for a handrail, or finding the brake pedal in a car without looking. They rely on sensory receptors in muscles, tendons, and joints that constantly send feedback to the brain, helping us coordinate movement and maintain posture.
As we age or recover from an injury, proprioception can become impaired. This may lead to an increased risk of falls, feeling unsteady, or sensing that a joint is about to give way—even after the pain from an injury seems to have resolved.
For individuals with chronic conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, arthritis, or chronic back pain, targeted proprioceptive and balance training can help restore motor function, reduce pain, and enhance mobility.
Even in otherwise healthy individuals, improving proprioception can:
- Enhance athletic performance
- Reduce the risk of sprains, strains, and overuse injuries
- Improve confidence when walking on uneven surfaces
- Help the body recover more effectively after a misstep or near-fall
How We Evaluate and Treat Balance and Proprioception
At our office, we assess and address deficits in both proprioception and balance, creating personalized treatment plans to restore function and stability. This may include targeted exercises using tools such as wobble boards, balance pads, or focused drills involving the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, ankle, or spine.
By improving proprioception and balance, we’re not just working on your ability to stand or walk—we’re helping promote long-term joint health, injury prevention, and overall well-being.
If you believe you are having issues with proprioception or balance, give our office a call today. We look forward to helping you resolve these issues and move with greater confidence.
