Red light therapy (RLT), also known as photobiomodulation, uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to stimulate your cells at a deep level. The light is painless, non-invasive, and does not damage tissue. Instead, it supports the body’s natural healing processes and helps tissues function more efficiently.

When red and near-infrared light enter the tissues, they are absorbed by mitochondria—the “power plants” inside your cells. This can increase ATP (cellular energy) production and improve how well the cells function. Better cellular energy means better repair, recovery, and resilience in muscles, nerves, joints, and blood vessels.

In the area of weight loss and metabolism, red light therapy is thought to support mitochondrial function and influence the way fat cells handle stored energy. One mechanism is called lipolysis—the breakdown of stored triglycerides inside fat cells into glycerol and free fatty acids that can be used as fuel. Lipolysis is normally controlled by hormones such as epinephrine, norepinephrine, glucagon, and cortisol. Red light therapy works alongside proper diet and activity to support a healthier metabolic environment.

For pain and inflammation, red light therapy helps by improving circulation, reducing inflammatory chemicals, and promoting tissue repair. Many patients with arthritis, muscle strain, tendon problems, and chronic joint pain notice that treated areas become less stiff and easier to move over time.

Red light therapy also encourages the release of nitric oxide (NO) from the mitochondria and blood vessels. Nitric oxide relaxes and opens blood vessels, improving blood flow and reducing vascular resistance. Better circulation means more oxygen and nutrients delivered to tissues and more efficient removal of waste products. This can support cardiovascular health, lower stress on the heart, and help tissues heal more completely.

In the nervous system, red and near-infrared light have been studied for their potential to protect and support brain and nerve function. By improving cellular energy and blood flow while reducing oxidative stress, red light therapy may help support memory, focus, mood, and overall brain health. Early research is exploring its role in conditions such as mild cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease.

Red light therapy is also widely used for skin and tissue repair. It can help stimulate collagen production, reduce redness and irritation, and support wound healing. This makes it useful after injuries, surgery, and in aesthetic applications for wrinkles, scars, and general skin rejuvenation.

For patients with neuropathy, red light therapy may help by improving circulation to nerves, supporting nerve metabolism, and reducing discomfort.
