Spinal and Extremity Manipulation
What Are Spinal and Extremity Manipulations?
Spinal and extremity manipulation involves applying a controlled, specific force to joints of the spine or extremities. The goal is to restore normal motion, reduce irritation, and support the body’s ability to heal and function properly.
These adjustments are not “random cracking.” They are carefully targeted procedures based on a thorough examination, orthopedic and neurological testing, and an assessment of posture, movement, and joint function.
Why We Use Manipulation
Manipulation is used for several key reasons:
- Restore proper segmental movement in the spine or involved joint.
- Address the underlying cause of pain or numbness rather than simply chasing symptoms.
- Normalize nerve function that can influence organs and other body systems.
- Improve overall body function, posture, and mobility.
Spinal Manipulation
Spinal manipulation—more accurately called a chiropractic adjustment—targets the vertebrae of the spine. It uses quick, precise movements to realign restricted segments, reduce nerve irritation, and enhance mobility. This technique is commonly used for conditions such as:
- Low back pain
- Neck pain
- Headaches
- Sciatica
- Certain types of organ dysfunction related to nerve interference
Extremity Manipulation
Extremity manipulation focuses on joints outside the spine: shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles, and feet. These adjustments help restore joint mechanics, improve range of motion, and relieve pain related to:
- Sports injuries
- Arthritis or wear-and-tear
- Carpal tunnel–type symptoms
- Knee and ankle pain
- Plantar fasciitis and foot dysfunction
- Repetitive strain injuries
How Adjustments Are Performed
Joint function is evaluated and treated with a course of specific chiropractic adjustments. These can be performed by hand or with a gentle mechanical instrument such as an activator, depending on the needs and comfort level of the patient.
For most patients, restoration of joint mobility is a comfortable procedure. Some people may feel mild tension or temporary discomfort if they are very guarded or unable to fully relax, especially during the first few visits.
At our office, we take every effort to reassure and support you before, during, and after each adjustment—explaining what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and how it fits into your overall treatment plan.
